Why Choose the 2-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
For those with limited time but an unyielding desire to experience the legendary Inca Trail, our 2-day Inca Trail trek offers the perfect solution. This short Inca Trail adventure condenses the essence of the classic route into a manageable and incredibly rewarding journey. Unlike other Machu Picchu tours, the 2-day Inca Trail from KM 104 grants you exclusive access to incredible archaeological sites like Wiñay Wayna, a privilege reserved solely for Inca Trail hikers. You’ll still arrive at Machu Picchu’s Sun Gate (Inti Punku), an iconic moment that makes this Machu Picchu 2-day trek truly unforgettable.
Your adventure on the 2-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu begins with a 06:00 AM hotel pickup. We'll transfer you to the train station for your journey to Ollantaytambo (either a 4-hour scenic ride or private transport during high season). From Ollantaytambo, you'll board a comfortable Tourist Backpacker Train with reserved seats for 1 hour and 45 minutes, arriving at KM 104, the starting point of your Inca Trail hike.
Upon arrival at KM 104, after crossing a bridge and a quick passport check, we'll embark on an easy walk. The Inca Trail leads right towards the fascinating ruins of Chachabamba on the other side of the Vilcanota River. After exploring Chachabamba, we'll continue along the trail, gradually climbing through a lush cloud forest. The trail then emerges into open grassland, offering breathtaking views as you continue your uphill ascent.
After approximately three hours of hiking in the sun, the path descends into a shaded forest where you can enjoy a beautiful waterfall – a perfect spot for a refreshing break. Leaving the waterfall behind, trekkers will soon arrive at the lower part of the incredible Wiñay Wayna ruins. It’s crucial to start this segment of your 2-day Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu with at least 2 liters of water.
After a well-deserved lunch at Wiñay Wayna, we'll traverse a vibrant cloud forest teeming with bromeliads, orchids, and fern trees. You'll walk the final section of the original Inca Trail, admiring its ancient stone steps and 'tambos' (resting places). The highlight awaits as we climb 60 Inca steps to reach Inti Punku (Sun Gate). From this sacred vantage point, you'll witness the marvelous Machu Picchuin all its glory, experiencing a profound sense of peace. We’ll pause for unforgettable photos before descending to Aguas Calientes. In this charming village, you can opt for a relaxing soak in the hot spring pools or enjoy some free time. (Lunch / Dinner included).

They are paid for completely as soon as your complete your booking and deposit, which means that you must buy completely new permits if you change your dates. What is the best Period to travel to Machu Picchu?
Usually, May to October is considered the best period to visit Machu Picchu, as it is the dry season. However, it can get pretty crowded, especially during July and August, somewhat ruining the spiritual dimension of the experience. Besides, nights can get quite cold during these months.
The rainy season, from November to April, brings heavy rains, with most precipitations coming down in January and February. It’s usually clear and dry most mornings with outbursts of heavy rain in the afternoons. During this period, some roads might be closed by landslides or flooding, in particular those leading to villages off the beaten track. And still, some people will take more pleasure in travelling during this period, as there are much less tourists around and a can a more mystic atmosphere can be experienced. Just consider the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is usually closed during February for maintenance.
Inca Trail - When is the best time to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
The dry season, which runs from April to October is the best time (and most popular) to hike because of the milder daytime weather. You will need to make your reservations 3-6 months in advance if you want to be assured of space during this time. During the rainy season, the Trail is less crowded and less advance time is required for reservations. The Inca Trail is closed during the month of February each year.
Are the guides bilingual and licensed?
All guides for tours are bilingual (Spanish and English) and have received course work and graduated from a certified guide program. They are licensed by the INC. If they are doing any tours at Machu Picchu, they must have additional courses and certification to do so.
Note that most of your guides will also be fluent in Quechua, the language of the native people in rural areas. They may also speak German, French, or other languages.
I have heard about a "local" train, can I take it?
Yes, there is a “local” train between Cuzco and Aguas Calientes but the government has decided that it is only for Peruvian and local residents and they have to show a Peruvian ID. Tourists cannot take it.
What to do with my luggage during the tour?
If you choose the 1-day tour, your luggage will theoretically stay in Cusco. However, if you choose the 2-day tour, you will maybe need to leave your luggage in Cusco. Most of the places where you might stay (hotel, hostel, guest house) offer to guard your luggage for free during the tour. But we can also gladly do it; just bring your luggage to our Agency the day before the tour.
